Muslim Heritage Month

In 2023, Governor Phil Murphy passed a landmark resolution declaring January as Muslim Heritage Month.  Like other heritage months recognized by the state of New Jersey, Muslim Heritage Month is an opportunity to provide cultural and educational programming for your students to learn about the rich and complex histories, cultures, and experiences of their diverse Muslim neighbors and classmates.  As home to one of the nation’s largest and most vibrant Muslim communities, comprising nearly 3.5% of New Jersey’s population, New Jersey schools are uniquely positioned to lead in cultural education that prepares students for success in our increasingly interconnected world.

The Rutgers Law Center for Security Race and Rights (CSRR) has developed a resource guide to assist school districts seeking to expand educational programming about the rich heritage and diverse experiences of New Jersey’s over 325,000 Muslim residents.  The Muslim Heritage Month Resource Guide advances school districts’ educational mission by deepening students’ cultural competency, critical thinking skills, and global awareness.

Integrating Muslim heritage in educational programming and curricula represents more than cultural celebration—it is an investment in preparing students for leadership in a diverse global economy. It also advances New Jersey schools’ anti-bullying and anti-bias educational goals at a time when Muslims have experienced unprecedented bias incidents.

The CSRR Muslim Heritage Month Resource Guide curates various resources, including books, documentaries, podcasts, educational videos, and multimedia materials highlighting Muslim American achievements, challenges faced, and contributions to American society.  While designed to foster cross-cultural understanding, some materials may touch on sensitive or complex topics. As such, these resources reflect diverse perspectives that are not necessarily the views of CSRR. We are confident that skilled teachers can determine which resources are age-appropriate and supervise students in thoughtful and respectful engagement with the content.
